Hey Cam,

Where are you located?  And what difficulty are you looking for?  Wink

I expect to be in the Capertee Valley doing Coinslot on Sunday. Said to be a classic - grade 6, mainly due to the tough climb up to access the canyon.  Camping in the Capertee on Saturday night.

I'd better check on numbers but will give you a call asap.

After doing Fordham today, was chatting about grading... Fordham is probably a grade 5, tougher than Long Gully but not deserving the grade 6 of say a Kanangra canyon.

So perhaps Coinslot might not be a grade 6.  But anyway, we're sure to find out.   Grin

Cam,

Sorry mate, I checked with our illustrious leader and we're maxed out on Coinslot with a party of 8!  Looks like the word has got around and now everyone man, woman and dog are going.  Roll Eyes  Could be a very looooong day.

On any other canyon we usually get 3 or 4 people and you'd be a shoe-in.  Can anyone else out there help out Cam on Sunday???  Sorry again buddy.

Hi Timmy

When we did Coinslot last year, it took about half a day to do.

We crossed the creek at GR502317 and climbed in an eastly direction to the base of the cliff line. Proceed left along the cliff line a fair way looking for a small overhang (cave). Go in the overhang and climb up above it by scrambling up the southern side. You may need a hand line here as it is a bit exposed. Continue climbing up and to your left, You should come across a ramp that will take you most of the way to the big tree covered ledge. There is a bit of a scramble up the last bit and again a handline is useful here. Once on the large ledge, walk right towards the canyon and drop in once you get above it.

I can only remember doing 4-5 absiels. The first is small one over a triangular rock. (Tom has a good picture of this one on his site). Next is a drop through a narrow slot down into a big caven. There is a small slippery drop that follows. We rigged a sling from the back wall and abseiled this 2m drop. There was a small hand line that someone had rigged but it didn't look too safe. The next 40m drop is real spec. When doing this drop, you have the choice of going inside or outside the chockstone 5m down from the top. The inside is best but be very carefull when pulling down the ropes that the knot doesn't get stuck on the chockstone. Ours did and I had to pussik up 30m to free it. If is a free fall abseil that comes drops into another caven and is very narrow at the top. Finally there is a 25m abseil over a slippery waterfall.

I would grade this canyon as a 4 even with the climb. I think Tom must of climbed up a much harder route than we did judging by his trip report on his site.

This canyon, along with Minnamarra Falls, were definitively the best of all the 40 or so canyons I did last season. You will have a ball.

Cheers
John
